173: Architect of Joy

Bryan Fuller.

When the news broke that Bryan Fuller was named the showrunner for the new Star Trek series set to debut in 2017, fan reaction was highly positive. Not only do Trek fans know of Fuller as someone who broke into Hollywood with a spec script for Deep Space Nine, but he wrote several episodes of Voyager and worked his way up to becoming a co-producer by the seventh season. Since then, Fuller has only continued to build a positive reputation as a producer with shows such as Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, and Hannibal. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss Fuller's contribution to Voyager as a writer and how those episodes might provide hints as to what we can expect from Fuller as the showrunner of the newest Trek series.

167: Representation Matters

Voyager's Impact and Legacy.

As The Next Generation ended its TV run and set sail for the silver screen in 1994, The Powers That Be™ Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor announced that a new incarnation of the Star Trek franchise would debut early in the following year. The show would take place in uncharted space and feature a starship NOT named Enterprise. And, most notably, the ship would be captained by a woman.

Now, more than 20 years after the show's debut, opinions about Voyager's place in the Star Trek legacy remain mixed, just as they were when the show aired. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan examine aspects of where Voyager thrived and failed as a Star Trek series, why these things happened the way they did, and how these examples might serve as lessons for the team developing the next series set to debut in 2017.

How has Voyager influenced you? How do you feel about Voyager's legacy in the Star Trek universe? Please share your thoughts at trek.fm/contact, The Babel Conference on Facebook, or on Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin). We may read and discuss your thoughts on an upcoming show.

To The Journey 159: Conversation is Irrelevant

TTJ AMA 2.

Char and Tristan know that listeners love it when they get a little personal. Some of the most popular episodes of To The Journey do just that, and it's the same reason why they did a Reddit-style "Ask Me Anything" in TTJ 137. That episode received so much of a response that Char and Tristan decided to open the floodgates once again and solicit questions from Twitter, The Babel Conference, and via email. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan answer questions from listeners about art, their thoughts on the X-Files revival, who they would not want to be alone with in the Delta Flyer, and so much more. Many thanks to everyone who sent in questions!

To The Journey 156: Matt Ships Seven/Bashir

Voyager in the Dominion War.

Char and Tristan love playing "what if" and this week they have a humdinger. In this episode of To The Journey, Char, Tristan and special guest Matt Rushing ponder just what might have happened if Voyager had made it home during the Dominion War, an important storyline in Deep Space Nine. They explore the possibilities of when and how Voyager made it home, as well as how Voyager could have played a unique part in ending the war. Also -- perhaps most importantly -- what does Voyager do when the Dominion War is over and the series still has two more seasons to produce until its conclusion? Listen on to hear all of this and more.

To The Journey 151: Hot Rod of the Delta Quadrant

The Small Things.

Char and Tristan love Voyager, no doubt about it. But it is not just the epic two-parters and the hope of getting home that make the show tick — it is the smaller details that make it endearing as well. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss the finer elements of Voyager that they find captivating. Some things became a part of the show seemingly by accident, like Janeway's roster of hairdos through the seven-year run. Others were done quite intentionally, like the design of the Delta Flyer, and were so unique to Voyager that they couldn't go unnoticed. Please chime in on The Babel Conference, Twitter (@ohtheprofanity and @TheInsaneRobin) or email Char and Tristan (trek.fm/contact) and share the smaller details you cherish the most.

To The Journey 139: Counseling With Neelix

Recasting Voyager & "The Supercrew."

They're younger, they're hotter...they're the crew you've never seen before and never will...because it's all hypothetical!

Char and Tristan take two questions held over from their Reddit-style AMA in episode 137, "TTJ AMA OMG!" Kicking things off with who they would choose from all Trek series for key positions on their "supercrew." They then jump into their choices for Voyager if it was cast today, Abrams-style. They researched who was up and coming in Hollywood and proposed two distinctly different lists, based on different methodologies for finding the perfect matches for a new crew. After you listen to this episode of To The Journey, let Char and Tristan know which stars you would cast if Voyager was rebooted in 2015. Please visit The Babel Conference, the listeners-only Trek.fm Facebook group, and share your thoughts!

To The Journey 136: Shattered Pelvis

Pairing Off.

In Voyager's earlier years, 75,000 light years was a long way from home. It seemed inevitable that the crew would spend the rest of their lives en route to the Alpha Quadrant. As Captain Janeway said, "All we have is each other," so it made sense that some members of the crew began falling in love and pairing off. What if we had seen more examples of this? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan explore possible pairings among the crew and determine if the relationship would be a hot fling, built to last, or the equivalent of a warp core breach.

To The Journey 135: Nerd Herd Immunity

The Season Four "Replacement."

In the summer hiatus of 1997, fans were on edge after viewing part one of the explosive "Scorpion" cliffhanger. With the news of a main cast member making an exit, fans did not know what to think. It was not known who was leaving until Season Four drew closer and Paramount revealed that Jennifer Lien (Kes) was being replaced by another actress.

Picture yourself in the writer's room and you are creating the new character who will debut in Season Four. What sort of character do you create? Char and Tristan play with this hypothetical scenario in this episode of To The Journey.

To The Journey 132: Bear Hug

Star Trek Las Vegas 2015.

When it comes to Star Trek conventions, none is bigger and better than Star Trek Las Vegas. With Voyager's 20th anniversary as the main focus of the 2015 event, this was a party Char could not miss. In this episode of To The Journey, Char helps Tristan experience STLV 2015 vicariously by telling him all about what she did at the convention and what happened when the entire Voyager cast (sans Jennifer Lien) reunited for the first time since the show finished filming. Was it as amazing as Char hoped? Listen on and find out.
