To The Journey 111: Heaven and Gre'Thor

The Afterlife.

Star Trek has never shied away from topics with no definitive answer, and therefore neither does To The Journey. In this episode, Char and Tristan undertake the episodes of Voyager that dealt with the possible afterlife. They examine several interpretations of where we might go after death, from The Great Forest to Gre'Thor — but be wary, for aliens living in another dimension could be lurking and waiting for the perfect moment to eat your soul!

To The Journey 110: Who Hurt Him?

Missing Voyager Flashbacks.

The recipe for Star Trek success has a few key ingredients: thought-provoking sci-fi stories, social commentary embedded in said stories, epic space battles, and memorable characters. And when it comes to characters, we as fans don't ever get enough of our favorites. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Earl Grey co-host Phillip Gilfus talk about missing character flashbacks they wanted to see on Voyager. Listen on and find out if Phillip is as infatuated with B'Elanna Torres as Tristan, the potential problems associated with parenting in the 24th century, and what missing scene might have given Neelix and Kes' romance more credibility.

To The Journey 104: Power Couple

The Voyager Reunion.

It's deplorable that we did not see what happened to the Voyager crew after they returned home. Yes, we got a glimpse of a reunion in "Endgame," but Admiral Janeway eradicated that future. So, what would the intrepid crew be up to in the canon universe we know and love? In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share their speculations on what each member of the crew could potentially be doing and where they might be living their lives 10 years after Voyager's triumphant return home.

To The Journey 102: I Need My Pain

Trek Through the Tough Times.

All of our lives are full of ups and downs. Though our minds gravitate towards looking back at the good times, the tougher times often equally affect who we become. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share how Voyager — and Star Trek in general — has been a constant and uplifting means of support through the more difficult periods in their lives, and how these experiences helped to shape the people they are today. Remember that when you are feeling down, Trek is always there to lend a positive presence.

To The Journey 94: Kept the Panting

Trek Actors Directing Voyager.

Most Trek actors gained their notoriety in pop culture from their roles on their respective series. However, for some, their involvement in Star Trek didn't end in front of the camera. Several Trek actors from TNG, DS9 and VOY went to "Trek Directing School," did their homework, and eventually made their directorial debut on a Star Trek TV series. For Jonathan Frakes, Robert Duncan McNeill, LeVar Burton, and Roxann Dawson, this experience paved the way for directing careers after Trek. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan talk about the Trek actors who directed episodes of Voyager.

To The Journey 91: More Hot Pockets!
Cast Crossovers.

Characters crossing over from one Star Trek show to the next happened rarely, but it did happen—even to the point of bringing well-established characters from one show and turning them into main characters on another. For instance, both Miles O'Brien and Worf jumped from TNG to DS9 and became pivotal characters, with more depth as a result. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan contemplate who they would have brought from TNG or DS9 onto Voyager and how that change would affect the Star Trek universe at large. No matter the scenario, crossover potential is huge, so listen on as Char and Tristan explore the possibilities.

To The Journey 86: Slowly Adding the Grit

Voyager in Today's TV Environment.

When Voyager premiered in 1995, it launched with the fanfare of the much-hyped United Paramount Network. Almost 20 years later, UPN is now defunct and the landscape of television production has changed drastically. Major networks must not only compete with cable, but also with streaming services, such as Netflix, that have added a new dimension of how, when, and which shows are available to the masses.

In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan discuss how Voyager might look and feel had it never aired in 1995 and was being produced for a 2015 release instead. They ponder the differences between how a major broadcasting company might produce the show compared to a cable network like AMC. They also imagine how fans would rabidly binge-watch a new Trek show on Netflix and how this would benefit the Star Trek community at large. Listen and find out if Char and Tristan think that the success of Cosmos would help a Star Trek series return to network TV, or if Voyager would have been in better company in the sexy and violent realms of HBO and Cinemax.

To The Journey 85: Pwning the Voyager

Rumored Voyager Episode Ideas.

People will say anything on the Internet. That's its beauty and its downfall. It's also why it's rarely wise to believe everything you read—because most of it probably isn't completely true. However, in this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan ignore their better instincts and discuss a list of rumored Voyager episode ideas that circulated the Internet in 1997 and 1998. Some ideas sound vaguely familiar, probably because they did eventually turn into aired episodes. For others, Char and Tristan are glad the writers dropped the notion. Still, the list includes a couple of gems that didn't make it on the show; and that's just tragic. Listen on and find out what the Voyager writers might have been considering for episodes in Seasons Three and Four.

To the Journey 84: Even Nerds Can Be Fit

Voyager as the "Soundtrack to Your Life."

Star Trek fans are well known for their loyalty to the franchise, and their devotion is a part of why the shows still have life today. Many fans started watching some incarnation of Trek at a young age and will remain fans for life. Tristan and Char are no different, and in this episode of To The Journey they talk about how their teenage years were influenced by Voyager. We discuss some of our favorite memories of how Voyager came to be intertwined with their life experiences (and vice-versa) and became a part of the "soundtrack to their lives." Listen on and hear about how "Threshold" influenced Char's life (no, really), find out which episode resonates with Tristan as the point when he knew he was locked in as a Trek fan, and much more.

To The Journey 83: Up Against a Wall

Janeway's Worst Command Decisions.

With four pips comes enormous responsibility. This is an attribute that all of the captains in Star Trek, from James T. Kirk to Benjamin Sisko, have come to understand. The well-being of the crew and ship hangs in the balance with every decision made. Actions will affect not only the crew, but possibly impact entire civilizations—or in Captain Kathryn Janeway's case, an entire quadrant. Janeway faced this task without the help or, perhaps at times, the hindrance of Starfleet Command and the Federation. While she did perform well under pressure most of the time, she is human and therefore fallible. Did Captain Janeway accomplish the most favorable outcome for Voyager and her crew or was the Delta Quadrant truly her Kobayashi Maru?

In this episode of To The Journey, Charlynn and Tristan discuss which of Janeway's command decisions were amongst her worst or most questionable. Should she have booted Neelix from the ship at the end of "Caretaker?" Was giving the Hirogen holographic technology Janeway's only option for ending the conflict in "The Killing Game"? Listen on and find out what Char and Tristan think of these moments and more.
